Hosta - American Sweetheart
Hosta American Sweetheart, Hosta 'American Sweetheart', is definitely a real sweetheart in the garden. It is a sport of Hosta 'Sea Thunder' with thick upright leaves. Like its parent, it displays green leaves with a white center. However, the tetraploid version has a much wider green margin and much thicker leaves, which are held more upright than 'Sea Thunder'. Lavender flowers top the clump in August. The leaves have wide dark green margins and creamy white centers. This low care perennial is ideal for shady positions. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5. 5 and 7. 5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth. Morning sun is tolerable and will help to intensify the leaf colors, but hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to hostas. They are most at home in shady, woodland settings and often work well as specimen or edging plants. . ... details
